Is Normal Really a Good Thing?

A lot of value is given to “normal” conditions. It implies a more or less routine or even unchanging condition. You hear, “it is normal to have a temp of 98 degrees” or “it is normal to have questions about ones gender” or “war is a normal condition of mankind”. Yes, normal seems to dismiss just about anything. But  there is an observable process of normalization whereby something is made or programmed to become normal. It gets slipped into films, ads, news article and of course educational materials. These are not secret, they are in plain view. But one must notice them.

I ask a sensible question…do we want war to be normal or gender fluidity to be normal or starvation in many countries to be normal. This process lowers the bar and gradually makes acceptable what just yesterday was not. The unusual and even weird becomes normal. Who is behind such normalization attempts.

Others are much better suited to getting at details and researching but few are as good at it as Whitney Webb. Her research is excellent and I also find her stance on the issues satisfying. I think of her as a good journalist built on the substrate of a good human being.

In the fight against making goofy bullshit normal, she stands out. Here is but one of her may excellent interviews. Enjoy, and may you never be normal.
