8 New Legs

As some know, I devote some of my needed time away from the numbers and long waits on the IRS line to the care of horses. The herd has had its losses over the last 2 years and was down to 7. This mixed breed herd is a finely tuned group of therapy horses. We also have 2 mini-donkeys which are favorites among the young children. Equine therapy requires calm and gentle horses. No one breed leads in therapy disposition but some individual horses clearly display more of  these traits than others.

Being in Nevada you might think we'd have a predominant number of Mustangs. But alas, no. We have one named Wyatt but I call him my little S---- because he can be quite the delinquent. Intuitively, as if knowing the children present need him to chill, he is kind and gentle with children. When the sessions are over, he goes right back to his shenanigans. I am fond of his spirit.

The 8 legs in this posts title are 2 new horses arriving to bring the herd back to its normal 9. Both are geldings of the beautiful Rocky Mountain Horse breed. Interestingly, the Rocky Mountain Horse is not from the Rockies. It was bred in Kentucky from foundation stock out of the West. A quick tutorial can be had at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Mountain_Horse. I'll post pics after my morning barn clean up. One thing about horse poop, it brings job security for the pooper scoopers. Personally, I love the smell of the barn. I love fighting the IRS too. That makes me well suited for the accounting Calvary.

Long ago, a wise associate convinced me that a hobby of some kind was a good idea. I took to outdoorsy activities but later in life lost my taste for hunting but not the dogs and shooting proficiency. My “old men” skeet group keeps me going as does my love for the Sierra and hiking its many trails. I am so fortunate to live in this area of the country just minutes from Lake Tahoe and among the numerous Horse and Angus ranches. Tax season will wind down soon and I am looking forward to more time with the herd and trying a few new treks.

If stress hits you, get outdoors. Help someone else or an animal in need, maybe volunteer caring for retired draft or trail horses. Not your thing? Well, humans are a good choice too. Attention away from oneself is a good elixir.

April 18th can't come fast enough. Giddy up!

Best to All.
