Fruits of Our Labor

On this Labor Day, let's remember why we do it. Why we put our collective shoulder to the wheel and get things done. I am sure there are many answers, as many as individuals I suppose. But my why is this...we labor to put order into chaos and thereby make the likelihood of long term survival rise. Add in that along the way we contemplate the pleasure of a plan coming into fruition and stave off all manner of disasters.

The dictionary defines Labor as human activity that provides the goods or services in an economy. There are other definitions but this is the one that sums up what we celebrate and honor on Labor Day.

My clients work hard. They labor at their chosen fields. For some it could be a "must" not a choice so their labor may be more laborious. But by and large, my clients work hard applying their skills, acquiring new ones and enjoying the fruits of their labor.

I for one get great pleasure out of doing a good job for a client. The money earned is just a part of my fruits. The enjoyment extends to the mundane too like just paying bills on time or paying off that burdensome car loan or treating a friend to a good meal or donating a few bucks to a worthy cause. These are just some of the fruits of my labor. What are your yours?

Working, applying one's self to a productive task is a blessing. No, I am not saying that workaholics are happier or better off than those who choose to work less, it's a matter what you desire. Two and even three jobs when worked out of dire necessity like some experience during inflationary times might be a rough life. But the day comes when even that reaps rewards. Some make it through times and others succumb. I think this is founded in their attitude about work, ie labor. Entrepreneurs work too and even those fat cat cigar smoking Capitalists on Wall Street work. It's a different kind of work to be sure and perhaps more financially rewarded, but I can't imagine there aren't some who like what they do and have their own set of fruits for their labor.

Whether a blacksmith or a banker, a doctor or a garbage man, on the field of labor there is an opportunity to enjoy what fruits are created. I say indulge in it.

Happy Labor Day and keep up the good work.

Best,
