Sadness in the Barn

As many know, I work with horses as part of an Equine Therapy group. My work gives me an up front and personal relationship with our herd and they have become great friends and sources of joy in my life.

A barn has all of life in it, and that includes death. It is on that subject that I write today.

We recently had out down Beau a huge white gelding and sweetheart. He'd trot out to the pasture toung wagging because he had lost his front teeth. He did great for a few years then his body began to give out on him and only meds kept him going. He was a great loss.

Last night I received a text from the group's found saying that Lucas had suddenly died. Lucas was a Rocky Mountain Horse and a beautiful black one with white socks at that. The breed is actually out of Kentucky. Here's a brief vid on the breed.

I have no detail nor do I expect an autopsy to be done. However, toxicity to something ingested is possible as is an internal injury or aorta burst. Horses have all manner of health issues but we care for our herd with excellent veterinarian care so this was a complete sudden surprise.

If you are so inclined, give a few bucks to Lead With Horses and help support the work done with children and troubled young adults.

Adios Lucas. Via con Dios.

Best,
